Be safe when frying your turkey

Posted by bent | I said so | Thursday 26 November 2009 10:06 am

Deep- fried turkey is rapidly becoming a Southern favorite. Its tricky, though and if you arent careful, you can get seriously burned.

Dont forget to make sure your turkey is dry before you drop it into the oil. Because they will cause a fire.

‘Most people associate a small grease fire. But when this happens it commonly happens so rapidly and you actually have a fireball that will erupt and it can be very detrimental,’ said Kelly Harcrow, Albany Battalion Chief..

Even if the taste of a deep-fried turkey is sure to please the palate, officials at Underwriters Laboratories worry backyard chefs are sacrificing safety for a tasty dish. They say the growing up number of fires related to turkey fryers is a risk that outweighs the benefits of the appliance.

In fact, the product safety testing service has rated deep-frying a turkey as so risky, it will not certify any turkey fryers with the UL mark, said Division Chief Michael Cox, a county Fire Department spokesman..

For those who went with frozen poultry, thawing the turkey may be top of mind. Check out foodsafety.gov for cooking and safety tips. But if the turkey is frozen, you can still pop it in the oven and cook. Just plan on 50% more cook time than you would for the unfrozen kind. For ‘turkey cooking time per pound,’ you can also check out the guide from Whole Foods Market. If you necessity extra hand-holding on the large day with the large turkey , Butterball is standing by for your cooking questions. . .

Save on Car Insurance

But there are some steps you can take to help bring down the cost.

For example, a 27-year-old single male driving a 2005 Honda Civic Sedan would pay 326 for a six-month premium, including comprehensive and collision coverage with a 500 deductible and property liability of up to 15,000, according to a quote from Farmers Insurance.

But the premium for the same policy would jump to 803 if he was driving a 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution.Insurance rates are based on the price of the car, how often that model is stolen and its safety record, says Jeanne Salvatore, senior vice president at the Insurance Information Institute.

State program offers low-cost car insurance

High unemployment in the central San Joaquin Valley is driving fear that more motorists are going without auto insurance because they cant afford it.

Ng will join CHP officers in Fresno today to promote the California Low Cost Automobile Insurance Program. The program helps low-income drivers get insurance that fulfills their legal obligation.

For a family of four, its 55,125 per year.

Such coverage carried an annual premium ranging between 632 and 2,200 for a married couple in 2007, according to a Department of Insurance survey of insurance companies.

But for qualifying low-income families, the low-cost insurance program — offered at 258 per year in Fresno County — satisfies the states financial-responsibility law by providing 10,000 of coverage per person or 20,000 per accident for bodily injury and 3,000 for property damage liability.

The basic insurance is catching on with motorists. In the first 10 months of 2009, the number of drivers enrolled in Fresno County has more than doubled, from 311 to 707. Similar growth is reported in other Valley counties. But officials say they believe there are thousands of drivers in the Valley who qualify but likely dont know about it.

I can be in Florida this weekend.

The Great American Smoke out day is today

The 2009 Great American Smokeout is today and a spokesperson for the Iowa Chapter of the American Cancer Society is interrogation smokers to take a different approach to the annual event. A-C-S spokesman Chuck Reed says they are encouraging smokers to use the day as a starting point to the end.

Pittsburgh, PA (PRWEB) November 19, 2009 — For a lots of humans, the 2009 Great American Smokeout means a new start but West Virginian Joe Balog sees it as a grand ending. To Joe, every November is a milestone anniversary. This year hes celebrating two years of smoke free living. In Nov 2007, Joe turned to Dan Vitchoff, Board Certified Hypnotherapist and President of PA Hypnosis Center in Pittsburgh, in what felt like a last straw to try to forsake cigarettes forever.

Great Falls High School student Sara Stewart many times hears from her peers that they believe they are immune to the effects of smoking.

‘I know that a lot of teenagers dont think smoke will affect them,’ Stewart said.

That was the idea behind her anti-smoking placard, which shows a woman with her left side is young, while her right side is elderly, gray and wrinkled.

Should Americans be interested for the raise in cigarette smoking? Yes. Smoking damages practically every organ in the human body and is linked to at least 15 different type of cancers. While, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, smoking standard have stayed for identical for the past 5 years, anything short of a refuse is doubtless troubling. wiki

NASA readies space shuttle Atlantis for launch

NASAs Shuttle Atlantis Prepared

‘Atlantis is ready to go, in really great shape,’ said shuttle launch manager Mike Moses at a press conference broadcast on NASA television.

NASAs space shuttle ‘Atlantis’ stands on Pad 39A at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida on November 15, 2009. Who doesnt want to be in Florida To see this.

The 11-day space outing, to be the fifth and last shuttle mission for 2009, is set to include three spacewalks aimed at storing space hardware on the exterior of the ISS. Does anybody know how many shuttles have been launched from Florida

he rocket is Ares I-X – a suborbital prototype for the Ares I rocket NASA plans to use to launch its shuttle successor, the Orion spacecraft. Currently the worlds tallest booster, the Ares I-X rolled out to the launch pad early Tuesday and is slated to blast off Oct. 27 at 8 a.m. EDT (1200 GMT) on a short demonstration flight.

The 445 million rockets rollout comes on the eve of a final report from an independent committee appointed by the White House to review NASAs plans for future human spaceflight.. Here is something new I learned about Florida

The Ares I-X is not a full Ares I rocket. Its first stage is a four-segment solid rocket booster – repurposed from the shuttle fleets inventory – capped with a dummy fifth segment. The thicker second stage, Orion crew capsule and launch abort system are also all mock-ups built to simulate the size and mass of the real thing.

Ronnie Brown injury is a blow

Ronnie Brown injury is a blow

The Dolphins season nearly came to an end earlier today.

With a visit to rapidly-improving Carolina up next, the Dolphins have some major problems, beginning with key injuries and a penchant for fourth-quarter collapses.

Running back Ronnie Brown’s ankle tops the list because who’s going to replace him?

He was out because of a coach’s decision, but Charlie Anderson and Cam Wake stepped in and combined for two sacks.

Quarterback Chad Henne showed some grit during his last-minute field-goal drive, making throws of 35 and 16 yards to Davone Bess.

Henne also threw a bad interception to set up the Bucs’ go-ahead score with 1:14 to go, putting a wilting defense back on the field.

Running back Ricky Williams had a big day, finishing with 102 rushing yards, capped by a 27-yard scamper to set up the game-winning FG.

1. Running back Lex Hilliard is likely to get his chance this week. But with no carries this season, will Hilliard be ready?

It was performances like that that earned him a spot on the Miami roster, though to be fair he’s retained it until now with strong special teams play.

Miami will need a strong running game against Carolina, whose own running game entered this week’s games leading the NFC in rushing. Just as Brown and Ricky Williams were a great 1-2 punch, Hilliard and Williams make for a tandem that could pound away at a Carolina run defense, which was ranked 23rd entering the weekend.

2. Linebacker Charlie Anderson made a bigger impact than Joey Porter has all season. But Anderson’s inconsistency, not his talent, has held him back.

{Anderson stepped in for Porter and had one of his best games in two seasons as a Dolphin, with five solo tackles, including a sack, and two forced fumbles.

Anderson, a sixth-year pro, showed big-time flashes a few times a season ago, highlighted by his performance in Toronto against Buffalo (four solos, a sack, two FFs). He followed it with nice outing against San Francisco, including a key sack late in the game.

A season ago, he led the team in penalties for much of the season. On Sunday, he was called for facemask on the second play of the game.

3. Kicker Dan Carpenter answered the challenge of training camp nemesis Connor Barth.

The Dolphins signed Barth during training camp to push Carpenter, who was struggling and admitted he was too focused on mechanics.

But the move made sense, given Carpenter had proven himself to be a consistent and clutch kicker for Miami as a rookie in 2008.

Another push for SunRail

http://www.jaxobserver.com/2009/11/06/democrats-call-for-sunrail-support-gop-says-about-time/

Florida Democratic leaders on Thursday called on Republican leaders to help draw down federal stimulus money to secure funding for SunRail.

House Speaker Larry Cretul, R-Ocala remains uncommitted, but House Republicans have said theyre waiting to get committed until they see if the Senate now has enough votes after killing the project earlier this year.

SunRail is the commuter rail project for the three-county area in Central Florida – Orange, Osceola and Seminole Counties.Florida is moving forward someone said.

He explained, A lot of the controversy that you heard about having something to do with the SunRail project is change. Very often it’s the North Florida TPO and Metroplan Orlando that are most often cited throughout the state as kind of setting the standards for regional thinking, regional cooperation, regional transportation planning. Isn’t it all about choices

Talks that a special session will happen by December to determine SunRail’s future became louder this week, when Central Florida leaders gathered in Orlando Wednesday for a meeting with U.S. Sen. George LeMieux to discuss the $1.2 billion project’s chances of gaining enough approval to become a reality.

Florida future is important.

Critics have called the deal between the Florida Department of Transportation and CSX unfair to the state due to a no-fault provision that would relieve CSX of legal liability for accidents related to the commuter train.
